Injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) is a type of temporary dermal filler. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally through out the body, with the highest concentrations in the joints, eyes, and skin. In the skin hyaluronic acid attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. As we age, the fat, muscles, bone, and skin in our face begins to thin. This loss of volume leads to either a sunken or sagging appearance of the face, fine lines, wrinkles, folds, and thin lips. Injectable HA is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, facial folds, and to create structure, framework, and volume to the face and lips. The effects of injectable hyaluronic acid are seen immediately.

After fillers it is an expectations to have various degrees of swelling and bruising. It is important to keep the treated area clean and free of make-up for at least 2 days so to decreased risk of infection. Avoid strenuous activity (lifting weights) for at least 2 days. Be kind to your healing and listen to your body on when you feel it is appropriate to return to normal activity.

Longevity of fillers depend on both the type of filler being used as well as where it is being placed. While fillers placed in the cheeks, jawline, nose, and temples using a thicker product can last upwards of 2 years. Fillers to lips, marionettes, and laugh lines require a softer product which will typically call for maintenance every 6-9 months.
